Blue Sky Analytics is proud to be a sponsor for FOSS4G, an annual global convention for the free and open source software community for geospatial technologies. In addition to its commitment to open source, its data scientists and engineers have also been selected to speak at the event scheduled to be hosted in Florence, Italy, from August 22, 2022, to August 28, 2022.
Blue Sky Analytics is a Climate-Tech Startup using satellite data, AI, open source and cloud computing to provide climate intelligence by building a comprehensive global catalogue of high-frequency and high-resolution environmental & climate datasets. The datasets are targeted at carbon markets, climate risk, and ESG investing in enabling global organizations to lead in climate action. It is a downstream space-tech and upstream climate-tech company with a vision to build Bloomberg for Environmental Data.
FOSS4G is the acronym for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial and is an annual recurring global event hosted by OSGeo. This non-profit organization supports and promotes the collaborative development of free and open source geographic technologies and open geospatial data.
Organized for the open source community, the conference covers topics related to geospatial information and earth observation openness, from the early use of FOSS4G in a space start-up to the use of open source tools to estimate global GHG emissions. The conference attracts over 1,500 practitioners and advocates annually and is the central meeting place for participants from across industries operating in the geospatial sector. The attendees include members of the GIS community, from developers and decision-makers to researchers and students.
Blue Sky Analytics actively contributes to the open-source community. Their most significant step in this direction has been providing annual, country-wise data on biomass fires and associated emissions to the Al Gore-led Climate TRACE inventory that the public can use under the CC-BY-4.0 license. They also operate SpaceTime™, their visualization platform, on a freemium model with the mission of democratizing climate data. They have also developed Raster Playground - an open source tool that allows users to input a set of raster tiles, shapefiles and a colour palette to visualize colourized raster outputs.
Talking about the sponsorship and speaking opportunity, Kshitij Purwar, Founder and CTO of Blue Sky Analytics, said, “In the past two years, we have analyzed TBs of data, delivered five datasets and built platforms for data visualization and distribution from scratch. The not-so-secret sauce of achieving these milestones has been open-source. Blue Sky Analytics has always been a firm believer in the power of open source and the immense opportunity it offers. Owing to the generous open data policy of organizations like NASA & ESA, we have been able to build a business collecting GBs of data daily and crunching them into useful insights. Hence, it gives me immense pleasure to be able to contribute to the community and help propel it further.”
Team Blue Sky will be attending the conference, with the following key members speaking at the event on the following topics:
-
Building the Bloomberg for Climate Data with FOSS - Kshitij Purwar, Founder and CTO.
-
Use of open source tools to estimate global GHG emissions - Saheel Ahmed, Senior Data Scientist.
-
Spatio-temporal Database - Creating a high availability, easily scalable Spatio-temporal database cluster with Postgres, PostGIS, and timescaleDB - Jashanpreet Singh, Tech Lead.
